Today’s decision not to sell of harvesting rights on Irish forests shows the public interest has been put first, Senator Jimmy Harte has said.
“The government has decided after an extended period of consulting with interested groups not to proceed with the sale of Coillte’s harvesting rights. This is decision is in the public interest, and people can know that public access to forests is secured for generations to come.
“While the government needs to raise revenue for investment in jobs and stimulus, our forests must be declared not for sale, and with today’s decision by Minister Howlin they can be declared safe in public ownership,” he said.
He commended Minister Howlin for this decision.
“The decision not to sell off Coillte harvesting rights shows the value of Labour in government, protecting this vital publicly-owned asset,” he added.
