A local councillor has come up with a novel idea to build a bridge across his community – for literally a fraction of the price!
Buncrana Town Councillor Ciaran McLaughlin has long been campaigning for a new footbridge in the Cockhill area.
However the Sinn Fein politician was told by the local council it would cost in the region of €150,000 to build such a bridge.
However while browsing online Cllr McLaughlin came across a 100 ft second-hand footbridge for sale with an asking price of just €5,000.
Now he is to present his idea to Buncrana Town Council to see if they will back his proposal.
“I’m not sure if all the dimensions fit but I think it’s worth a go and investigating.
“During the current difficult economic times I think we have to think outside of the box.
“It’s no secret that Cockhill desperately needs a footbridge and this could be out answer.
“We could get the bridge for a fraction of the original costings and even if we were to spend money upgrading it, it could possibly save us a small fortune,” he said.
