UP to 1,000 people have marched through Dungloe today in support of the reopening of 10 beds that have been closed recently.
The parade was led by St Crona’s band Dungloe, and hundreds of people followed the band, down Dungloe main St, and over to the Dungloe hospital.
The crowd were thanked by Pat Glackin a member of the organising committee, and committed to redouble their efforts and keep the campaign going until all beds are reopened.
Cllr Marie Therese Gallagher said: “We the Lobby group are delighted with the turn out today, hundreds of people turned out in the driving rain to show their support to have Dungloe Hospital running at full capacity.
“It is very important for the people to have their voice heard and the turnout today sends a very strong message to the Government and HSE that the people of this area will continue to campaign to ensure that all beds are reopened.
“Our Community hospital needs investment and development, our people deserve to be cared for in their own local community.
“Dungloe hospital is a shining example on how to deliver services and meet the needs of West Donegal.
“We now must continue the great work of the local community and ensure the future of Dungloe Community Hospital.”
Thomas Pringle TD, who couldn’t attend due to other commitments, vowed to work to overturn the HSE recruitment ban which is at the centre of the Dungloe hospital dispute.
Deputy Pearse Doherty was at today’s event in support of the Rosses community.
