THE entire town of Lifford is in mourning following the death of much-loved local man Coleman ‘Collie’ Tourish in a road traffic accident on the Barnesmore Gap on Monday.
Mr Tourish, 75, died at Letterkenny General Hospital later despite the valiant efforts of medical staff. His friend Mary Crossan was injured in the crash which happened when a camper van was in collision with their car.
A couple from Wicklow, who were in the camper van, were rushed to Sligo General Hospital to be treated for their injuries.
A former Donegal County Council worker, employed in the water services department, Mr Tourish was well-known and well-liked in the Border town and beyond.
His late wife Margaret, who fought kidney disease for many years, passed away in 2010.
“I can’t begin to tell you the depths of grief in Lifford after Colie’s death,” said one family friend.
“Everybody in Lifford knew him. He was a lovely lovely man.”
Ironically Collie was known for his love of camper vans; keeping and restoring them over many years.
He was a vibrant member of his local community; and worked hard to save Lifford Hospital from closure last year.
The crash occurred on the N15 at Keadue, Barnesmore, Donegal at 3.45pm yesterday.
Gardai are investigating how the crash happened.
