Abbey Vocational School win their national title

Numerous Irish records fell, when the Irish Schools finals were held yesterday at Tullamore.

Donegal Town’s Abbey Vocational School Under 17 Girls led the charge when their 4 x 100m team of Kelly McGrory, Emma Brady, Kate McGowan and Ruth Gillespie smashed a 40 year old record in recording a magnificent time of 49.29secs.

Individual points were added for an overall school victory by Kate McGowan, Long Jump and 80m Hurdles, Katoe Hoad Pole Vault, walkers Ciara Crawford and Jessica Quinn and Mc Grory’s impressive 300m H win in a very good time 0f 43.7secs.,

Other North West youngsters to impress included Zak Irwin from Sligo Grammar who won the Inter Boys 100/200m, Arlene Crossan, Loreto Letterkeny who smashed a twenty five year old Junior Girls U15 Long Jump record wiith a best of 5.58, South Donegal’s Scoil na Carraige’ms Naomh Byrne who won the Junior Girls Pole Vaule -2.30m, Royal and Prior Raphoe’s John Kelly who pushed the Senior Shot to 16.13m for an impressive victory.

In all a total of 13 new records were set on a day described as the top underage sports day on the Irish calandar.
