The burned cottage at Derryconnor near Gortahork, Co Donegal where pensioner Jimmy Mc Cafferty, 87, died on Sunday morning.

Neighbours tried desperately to save the life of a man who perished in a housefire in West Donegal yesterday morning.

Passers-by noticed smoke from the home of Jimmy ‘Tom’ McCafferty from Derryconnor, Gortahork at 7am.

A number of people tried to gain entrance to the house but failed.

The emergency services eventually got in and rushed the pensioner to Letterkenny General Hospital but it is believed he died en route.

One theory is that the fire started from an open fire being used by the late Mr McCafferty.

The roadside cottage suffered extensive damage in the fire include structural damage to the roof.

Sources say the dead man suffered entensive burns to his body.

The dead man lived alone but he had a number of relatives living locally including a sister living in Falcarragh.

An investigation has been launched into how the fire started.

The man’s remains are at Letterkenny General Hospital where a post mortem is due to take place today.
