Congratulations: A clean sweep was made at the Donegal Hurling skills finals by Buncrana U14 hurlers in Letterkenny on Sunday evening. Dylan Duffy was the delighted and deserved winner closely followed by Paul Tourish and PJ Mc Carron. All three are committed young hurlers and a worthy winners and a credit to themselves and their families.
U14 Hurling: Buncrana U14 hurlers secured the Donegal Féile title in Ballyshannon in more than impressive fashion on Saturday, with comfortable wins over Burt, Ballyshannon, St Eunans and Letterkenny Gaels. It wasn’t so much the size of the comfortable wins, it was more the skill, attitude and all round team performance from all the squad that was impressive. This now sets up a trip to Killeedy in west Limerick at the start of July for the Féile na nGael finals, which is just reward for their dedication to training all year.
Team: Jason Campbell, Cathal Óg Wilson, Paul Tourish, Oisin Hegarty, Matthew Wilson, John Vaughan, PJ Mc Carron, Fiachra Mac Lochlainn, Ben Doherty, Niall Doherty, Oisin Grant, Dylan Duffy, Aran Craig, Oisin Doherty (Roe), Darren Connelly, Gavin Kelly, Ryan Hegarty, Mark Craig and Liam Doherty.
These boys will also form the back bone of the clubs football team that will host Clonmel Commercials from Tipperary as part of the Derry Féile na nÓg, these dual players have the joy of pitting their skills against some of the country’s best young hurlers and footballers and will hopefully have a summer to remember.
Thanks to John Rooney and the Aodh Ruadh club for hosting a well run tournament and for the refreshments for all afterwards.
Senior and Reserve Football: Both sides lost out to Glenswilly on Sunday, the Reserves performed well in the first half, however were unable to hold on for the win. The senior side lost on a scoreline of 1-16 to 0-10. Next up for the Senior side is a home fixture on Friday night against MacCumhaill’s, throw-in times are yet to be confirmed.
Senior Ladies Football: Our ladies team had to travel to a windy and wet St. Naul’s of Mountcharles on Sunday. The under-strength squad of Buncrana were faced with the experienced Mountcharles side and had to play in very tough underfoot conditions. The girls had a tough challenge on their hands from the outset, but they dealt with it well and created some great scoring changes for themselves.
The talents of Caroline Gallagher, Dede Grant, Michelle Browne and Natasha Craig, to name but a few, helped keep the scoreline as close as they could throughout the match. The entire Buncrana squad showed great heart and spirit and teamwork throughout the 60 minutes, but all their efforts couldn’t earn them anything from this game; especially with the experience of county player Elish Ward in the Mountcharles team creating most of the attacking play for their opponents. So unfortunately St. Naul’s ran out winners comprehensively in the end, meaning the Buncrana ladies suffered their first defeat in their league campaign this year.
