THE Government spent more than €104M on running embassies and consulates around the world last year, according to figures released to Donegal TD Pearse Doherty.
More than half the money went on RENT – including €150,000 in a consulate in East Timor – and 77 other properties.
Ireland also spent €4.34million on its three Brussels officers in 2012.
London cost €2.86million with €1M that on an annual lease. Also among the costliest embassies in Europe are Paris at €1.64million, Geneva at €1.28million, Rome at €1.23million and Berlin at €913,000.
The Consulate General office in New York cost €1.8million, with €875,000 on rent alone, while the Irish United Nations base also in the Big Apple cost another €1.48million.
The embassy in Lesotho, Africa, ran up a bill of €534,000.
