MERCHANTS in Letterkenny face fines of up to €5,000 from May 1st if they sell smoky coal, Donegal County Council was told today.
Shops selling smoky coal also face hefty €1k on the spot penalties.
The information was given to Cllr Michael McBride who wants the council to ask Environment Minister Phil Hogan to reverse the measure, saying it will have a detrimental effect on Letterkenny.
The town is one of seven towns with populations over 15,000 people which are being hit with the new measures.
Cllr McBride said that one Letterkenny retailer had found that 30% of his customers buying smoky coal were from outside the town.
