A post mortem has been carried on the body of 46 year old Peter Cavanagh.

His body was found on Monday night after the tragic incident at the town’ Lower Main Street area.

Investigators are following the theory that the man put on the chip pan before he fell asleep on the sofa.

It is understood the man died from smoke inhalation and not as a result of burns.

Garda forensics team spend a number of hours at the scene of the fire at the small flat.

Local Garda Superintendent Eugene McGovern visited the scene of the tragedy yesterday and asked to be briefed on the matter.

The man’s remains were removed from the scene just before lunchtime yesterday.

Gardai are now compiling a report on the death for the Coroner’s office.

Mr Cavanagh was a native of Derry and had been living in Buncrana for some time.
