*Seniors*
CLG BnaG 1-11 Letterkenny Gaels 1-6
The Seniors had to battle hard in their league opener today to come away with two vital points. Playing against a swirling breeze in the first half Milford did well to contain Letterkenny Gaels but the opening 20 minutes were a tight affair with neither team troubling the score board much up until Cathal McGettigan scored a goal to put Milford 1-2 to… 0-1 up. Milford caught a break when a Letterkenny Gaels forward was coming through on the endline, and due to the sun being in the umpires eyes he raised his hand to shield them, meaning that the referee assumed he was giving a 45 and blew his whistle just as the Gaels forward rattled Sean Gallaghers net. LK Gaels won a free from the resultant throw up before the ref blew the half time whistle to leave Milford 1-2 to 0-2 ahead at half time. Gaels got an equalising goal straight after the break when a high ball was parried by Gallagher and rebounded off an onrunning LK Gaels forward and ending up in the back of the net. Milford reacted well to this to put themselves two points ahead to always keep Gaels at arms reach to run out comfortable enough winners in the remaining ten minutes. Nigel Black felt it was a great team effort with special mentions going towards Conor McNulty, Anthony Fisher, Cathal Mc Gettigan and Christopher Barrett. Manus Boyce sustained a broken arm late in the game and all at the club wish him a speedy recovery.
Team: Sean Gallagher, Cormac Friel, Barry McNulty, Conor McNulty (0-2), Sean Black, Tj Evesson, Manus Boyce, Anthony Fisher (0-1), Lorcan Friel, Caolan Bolton, Pauric Curley, Chippy Barrett (0-1), David Curley (0-1), Cathal McGettigan (1-6), Paddy Peoples. Subs: James Doyle for Bolton (35m), Anthony McPaul for Black (45m), Darragh Black for C. Friel (50m), Jamie Heena, Brandon Toye, Kevin McGee, Caolan McGettigan
*Reserves*
CLG BnaG 1-9 Letterkenny Gaels 1-6
Milford got the Reserve season off to a winning start last night beating LK Gaels by 1-9 to 1-6. The team had a nice mixture of youth and experience all over the field. Caolan Mc Gettigan marshalled the defence superbly and kept Milford in the game with a string of great saves. Caolan ‘Cluxton’ McGettigan also stepped up to score 3 long range frees. Jamie Heena worked very hard and played very well in defence with himself and Dean Burgess standing out. Gary Helferty commanded the forward line while James McGinley was in fine scoring form. To wrap up the tie they brought on experienced heads Aidan Cannon and SP Barrett to see the game out.
*Cadbury GWA/GAA Young Reporter of the Year*
Congratulations to Miriam Fitzsimons on being the first winner of the Cadbury GWA/GAA Young Reporter of the Year competition. Miriam is a niece of Aodh McCormick and has occasionally helped out at several u10 trainings. Miriam wrote an excellent article on the importance of self-belief in Gaelic Games. In her piece, the Donegal teenager uses the example of how Jim McGuinness turned her native county’s footballers from also-rans into All-Ireland champions in the space of two years. As well as having her article published, Miriam scooped a €500 bursary cheque to go towards her education, sponsored by Cadbury. You can read her article here: www.gaa.ie/gaa-news-and-videos
