DONEGAL County Council is set to look at dimming the county’s thousands of street lights in a bid to cut costs.
It cost the council €1.58M to light up 13,800 street lights last year, with the bill set to increase in 2013.
The council says it is exploring a number of possibilities, including solar and turbine power was well as energy efficient bulbs and lamps.
A council spokeswoman said: “Many of these require capital investment which we are unable to provide at the moment.
“The council is in the early stages of exploring the issues around the dimming of public lighting from dusk to dawn and ‘smart chips’ in lights, but this approach would require much more consideration.”
Any move to dim street lights will save money – and is no different to what many councils have already done in Britain.
One local authority in Bradford saved Stg£400k by dimming the lights there.
