Mick was an enthusiastic member of the Ardara community right up until his death, chairing the Parish Council there in recent years even as his health failed.
Today glowing tributes have been paid to Mick and condolences extended to his wife Irene and his daughters Tanya and Michelle and his son Shane.
His remains are reposing at the family home in Hillhead from 4pm today.
Originally from Kilmacrennan, Mick was first stationed in Co Kerry before his transfer back to his native Donegal and to Ardara where he retired in 1990.
Friend Cllr Terence Slowey led tributes to him today.
“Ardara has lost one of its leaders today,” said Cllr Slowey.
“Mick was one of the great people, a brilliant Garda and an enthusiastic and proud member of the Ardara community.
“He was always helpful, courteous and had a wonderful heart. Everyone’s thoughts this weekend will be with his family.”
A fluent Irish speaker, the retired sergeant was also a keen angler and dedicated himself to the protection of the environment. He had followed his late father into the force. He had also been a Garda sergeant.
Funeral Mass will take place for Sgt Mick at 11am at the Church of the Holy Family in Ardara on Monday.
