LETTERKENNY is to get a second post office, Donegal Daily can reveal.
An Post will advertise later this month inviting expressions of interest from anyone who wishes to run the the post office which must be based in the Glencar area.
It follows a long campaign for a second post office in a bid to release pressure on staff at the Main Street Post Office.
“This is great news for the town and great news that the new post office will be based in Glencar,” said Cllr Ciaran Brogan (pictured) who had upped the pressure on An Post last year over the issue.
“An Post has now confirmed that expressions of interest will be invited in the next couple of weeks.
“A new post office should be up and running in Glencar in July,” he said.
Cllr Brogan also dismissed suggestions that this would have an adverse affect on the Main Street.
“Staff at the current post office will be relieved because they were under-resourced to deal with the sheer volume of customers,” he said.
“And it will be welcomed throughout Letterkenny by customers who know what the queues could be like there.”
The councillor thanked An Post for “listening to the careful arguments put forward for a second post office and Glencar is the perfect location.”
It’s thought the businesses who could tender for the new post office include Gormley’s Centra and any of the current businesses operating from the small retail park a few hundred metres away.
Senator Jimmy Harte has also welcomed the move.
“ I am delighted to hear that An Post is finally doing the logical thing and locate a PO in the Glencar area of Letterkenny.
“For too long the public in Letterkenny have be forced to queue in the open to get into the Post Office on the main St , in fairness to the staff there they were not supported by the senior Management in Dublin and were under pressure on most days.
“I had a petition of almost 1,000 members of the public in 2011 who called for another PO in the Town. The area of Glencar is as big as many towns in the county and it was ridiculous to make people stand in the rain waiting on accessing the services of An Post.
“I do recall getting criticism from certain quarters on my proposal but I now see that a solution will be soon on the cards.
“I’m sure that there will be addition jobs created also but the main story here is that the public are being put first for a change and the residents of Glencar and the wider area will have an enhanced service in their area in addition to the shops that are operating there,” he said.
