There has been uproar after Letterkenny General Hospital and Euro Car Parks hiked up their charges for patients and visitors parking at the hospital.
The minimum fee people parking at the hospital must now pay is €3 – an increase of 50c from the previous charge of €2.50.
The move has been slammed as pure greed with both Euro Car Parks already making a healthy profit from the running of the service.
Letterkenny Town Councillor Gerry McMonagle has demanded both hospital management and Euro Car Parks to justify the increase.
He fumed “If it wasn’t bad enough already charging people who are visiting sick relatives or friends or even those attending for treatment at the Day Services we now have in these very bad financial times for people another price hike from the hospital and Euro Car Parks for use of the car parks at the hospital.”
The Sinn Fein councilor said the least that could be done by the hospital and Euro Car Parks is to give the public an explanation as to why they have decided to increase the car parking charges.
“Both the hospital and Euro Car Parks are making a handsome profit from car parking fees each year and it is nothing short of greed to increase these charges further.
“The result of these further hikes will lead to increased use of parking at housing estates surrounding the hospital and will lead to further inconvenience for those residents who live nearby the hospital,” he said.
He said he was now appealing to the Hospital Management and Euro Car Parks who operate the hospital car parks to step back from these latest increases and to put the visitor and patients first.
