People are flocking to Ireland’s first chicken-coop making class.
The class at the Downstrand Family Resource Centre in Portnoo is already sold out.
And there is already a list of people ready to wing it to the next course.
Co-ordinator Kate Morgan said the demand among local people has been huge.
“I think a lot of people want to get back to basics and see keeping chickens as a wonderful way of doing that.
“An awful lot of people kept chickens in the past but I think it has skipped a generation.
“It’s very much part of the back-to-basics attitude that people are finding very fulfilling now,” she said.
The cost of the five-week course is €80 and that covers all the materials.
Children are allowed to take part but they must be accompanied by an adult for safety reasons.
Local carpenter and teacher Ronan O Murchu is keeping students on their toes and ensuring the chicken coops are solid.
Oisin Moran, who keeps chickens locally, will also advise the students on how to keep their chickens in good health once the coops area ready for guests.
“We are hoping to see chickens all over Portnoo in a few weeks time,” said Kate.
