A 29-year-old man is being questioned by Gardai today about a terrifying incident in which shop workers were held at knifepoint.
Officers moved quickly to investigate the robbery at Cullen’s shop in Cockill, Bunrana, at 7.30pm on Monday evening.
A suspect entered the premises armed with a huge knife – thought to be 10 inches long. He threatened staff and demanded money and escaped on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Donegal Daily has learned that the suspect is a 29-year-old foreign national.
He was arrested in Inishowen last night.
Detectives had arrived at Cathal Cullen’s shop within minutes of the raid after a panic alarm was set off. He praised gardai for their swift response.
A Garda spokesman told Donegal Daily: “Detectives investigating an armed robbery in Buncrana on Monday evening have arrested a man. He is being held at Buncrana Garda Station for questioning.”
It’s understood detectives have obtained vital forensic material in their investigation into the crime.
A source said: “This has been a top priority case for Gardai since it happened. Officers are pleased with progress.”
