The priest who quit his Co Donegal post after claiming he was being bullied may be persuaded to change his mind.
Numerous parishioners in Glencolmcille have approached local county councillor Brendan Byrne to mediate between the two parties.
And now Colr Byrne said he is will to try and resolve the issues between Fr Bill McGeady and anyone who has a difference of opinion with him.
Colr Byrne told Donegal Daily that “nothing is insurmountable.”
“We can get over this. People have differences of opinion all the time and I think we can resolve this issue.
“The alternative, the fact that Glen could be left without a priest, is not even worth thinking about.
“Whatever differences the two parties have had is minor in the grand scheme of things.
“I would be quite happy to mediate between Fr McGeady and other people,” he said.
Fr McGeady, who is originally from Gaoth Dobhair, claimed he could no longer continue his duties after being physically and verbally abused by people for the way he ran his parish.
Last Sunday morning the 74 year old issued a letter to parishioners in which he outlined his situation and offering his resignation.
Colr Byrne said the vast majority of people who contacted him had nothing but good things to say about Fr McGeady.
“I haven’t spoken to Fr McGeady personally but I would be happy to sit down and try and sort things out.
“The vast, vast majority of people who have spoken to me about the situation have nothing but good things to say about Fr McGeady.
“But if people do have certain issues, then surely we can sit down as adults and resolve them. As I said already, nothing is insurmountable,” he said.
