Two specialist mechanics who were caught racing on a dual carriageway have escaped losing their driving licenses after getting top marks on a new driving awareness course.
Friends Jamie Cunningham and James Spratt were caught by Gardai doing more than 150km/hr on the dual carriageway outside Letterkenny.
Pursuing Gardai could not catch the men because they were going so fast.
The men were later charged with dangerous driving.
The mechanics were later ordered to carry out the Pro Social Drivers Programme aimed at rehabilitating drivers.
Both men appeared at Letterkenny District Court yesterday where the court heard they had both scored 100% on their tests on the programme which aims to encourage safer driving.
The court heard the men also have modified cars which they use at weekends as well as a VW Passat and Jetta which they use during the week.
Judge Paul Kelly told the men they were lucky but that the incident could have resulted in tragedy.
He then agreed to reduce the charge from a Section 53 of dangerous driving to Section 52 of careless driving.
But he warned both men: “You are extremely lucky to be leaving court with your licenses and I hope you have learned a salutary lesson.
“If I see you here again on driving matters you will lose your license.”
