Donegal is on storm alert with winds of more than 100kph forecast over the next 48 hours.
Sleet and snow is also likely to fall across the county this evening as freezing temperatures kick-in.
Already wind gusts of 102 kph have been recorded at Malin Head.
A spokesman for Met Eireann said that these winds could get even stronger as the day progresses.
More than 400 homes in Ballyshannon and the surrounding areas are without electricity after gusts knocked down powerlines and the Harry Blaney bridge has been closed in Fanad.
Falls of sleet and possibly heavy snow are also being forecast for this evening and throughout the night.
“It will be pretty windy and we will have sleet and snow overnight – especially in the North-West.
“Gusts 61 mph have been recorded already and they could get stronger throughout the day so caution is advised.
“That will last for the next 48 hours but milder weather is forecast after that,” said a spokesman for Met Eireann.
