Congratulations to Olympic race walker, Brendan Boyce who won the athletics category in the Donegal Sports Star of the Year Awards which were presented in the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny on Friday night.
The other nominees in the category were Letterkenny AC’s Maria McCambridge and Mark English. Club coach, Teresa McDaid, was among the nominees in the manger/coach of the year which went to Donegal senior football team manager, Jim McGuinness.
Club captain, Aidan McKenna, has been extremely busy over the last week with entries for this weekend’s national intermediate and masters cross country championships which are being held in Gransha, Derry, on Sunday afternoon. Aidan has managed to enter teams in all four races this weekend and hopefully all 30 members who pull on the black and amber vests on Sunday will have good runs.
Ciaran Doherty was runner-up in the Northern Ireland masters cross country at Lurgan Park on Saturday. The race was won by Dave Morwood of Annadale Striders in 28:18, with Ciaran Doherty second (28:37) and Alan O’Hara of North Belfast third (28:50).
Darren McBrearty came third in the 1500 metres at the Woodie’s DIY AAO Games in the new Athlone IT indoor arena on Sunday when posting a time of 3:45.38. Matthew McLaughlin was the race winner in 3:42.87 and Holland’s Mark Nouws was second in 3:43.53. Also running the 1500 metres from Letterkenny AC were Darren King and Peter Gibbons.
Kevin Ferry was the club’s quickest runner in the Raphoe 5K held on Sunday morning in difficult conditions. His time of 17:22 placed in fourth overall behind David Taylor of Lifford AC (16:59), Michael Black, 24/7 (17.05) and Foyle Valley’s Cathal McLaughlin (17:18). Other LAC who took part were Kevin Ferry (4th in 17:22), Paul McGlinchey (6th in 17:28), Brian Ferry (10th in 18:19), Paddy McDaid (11th in 18:21), Enda McBride (12th in 18:29 and first junior man), Joe English (14th in 18:40), Seamus Morrison (37th in 20:36), Brian McBride (50th in 21:03), Cathal Roarty (81st in 22:14), Noel Lynch (90th in 22:39), Enda Carr (94th in 22:52) and Ruth McCrudden (159th in 26:01). Ben Carr won the juvenile race over a mile on 5:57.
The club extends its sympathy to the Gallagher family, Lower Main Street, Letterkenny on the death of Annette last week.
Runners training with the club are reminded that membership is now due for renewal. It is important that all those who are training regularly with the club are registered with the club.
Training continues every Tuesday and Thursday at 6.30 pm with the front door of the Aura Leisure Centre the meeting point. Runners are advised to wear a reflective vest.
