Donegal’s biggest security company has recorded a 25% jump in demand for house alarms since a crime wave hit the county three weeks ago.
Managing Director of Orbit Security, Martin Hilferty, said raiders are getting more fearless by the day.
The security boss revealed that the vast majority of the 20 homes raided by burglars across Donegal in recent weeks did NOT have burglar alarms.
“That is not a coincidence. It makes perfect sense that a burglar will look to see if a property has alarm.
“From my understanding, the majority of not all of these houses raided in recent weeks do not have alarms and that is a serious concern,” he said.
He said his office is inundated with calls since a spate of burglaries across Donegal.
“There has been a shocking increase in the number of incidents here in recent weeks.
“Thankfully, people are beginning to use a bit of common sense and are getting decent security for their homes.
“The days of having a house empty without having a proper alarm system are long gone,” he said
He added that older people should not be put off by technology if thinking about getting an alarm system for their homes.
“Older people are worried that they will forget codes for alarms and they won’t be able to work them if they go off.
“But many modern alarms can be simply worked using an on and off button,” he said.
A number of people have appeared before the courts in connection with the spate of burglaries and have been released on bail pending future appearances.
