2.00AM UPDATE: A MAN has been rescued from a cliff-face near Carrick after a 12-hour emergency operation.
Both the Donegal Mountain Rescue team and the Killybegs Coast Guard took part in the operation to rescue the climber.
Members of the Sligo/Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team were also at the scene, taking the number of rescuers to more than 30.
The 28-year-old man was stuck 450-feet down a cliff after falling at lunchtime yesterday. He was flown to hospital in Sligo just after 1am where he is being treated for neck and leg injuries.
The climber, a native of Carlow, is expected to make a full recovery.
Said Brian Murray from Donegal Mountain Rescue: “The Climber who fell on Slieve League Cliff was rescued in one of the biggest and most Technically difficult rescues in the North West in Years.
“Killybegs Coast Guard made heroic attempts to reach the casualty with their specialist rope rigging equipment assisted by DMRT and SLMRT. The Casualty was located almost 400 metres down the sheer face of Slieve League. Rescue 118, Aranmore Lifeboat, HSE, Garda and locals all joined the effort.
“The casualty was hauled to the top of around. 00.15hrs. The Casualty was then Stretchered to a waiting HSE ambulance in Bunglass by DMRT and SLMRT. Teams arrived home after 03,00hrs.
“He’s very lucky that he fell where he did. He had bruising and was suffering from hypothermia but is expected to make a full recovery.”
