AN influx of shoppers and visitors from the North has helped to give retailers in Co Donegal their best Christmas sales in five years.
The main shopping town of Letterkenny was packed with shoppers today as the long weekend before Christmas and the mild weather gave locals and visitors alike the opportunity to fill up for the festive season.
Both the main street and the retail park were packed throughout Sunday – with more of the same expected on Christmas Eve.
McElhinneys in Ballybofey also has an extremely busy Sunday and opens again until 6pm on Christmas Eve.
The store has also launched its online sale with up to 50% off items at www.mcelhinneys.com.
Queues formed at many supermarkets early – and by the afternoon they were even longer as shoppers tried to get their hands on ingredients for Christmas dinner.
Visitors from the North have been attracted by a healthy exchange rate on sterling and recent trouble in Belfast and Derry.
It looks like all retailers have benefitted from the Christmas cheer.
On Sunday afternoon shoppers queued at Kelly’s of Mountain Top to get their hands on half-priced goodies – including large tins of Roses for €6.
