Forensics teams have started an investigation after a 69 year old man has died in a house-fire in Letterkenny.
The fire started last night in Glenkeo, Killyclug on the outskirts of the town past Glencar.
Terry McDermott lived alone and nobody else was injured in the blaze which is believed to have started in the kitchen of his cottage.
Cllr Ciaran Brogan, who knew the man well, said today: “The whoe community is saddened at the death of Mr McDermott.
“He was just a lovely man and very highly thought of by everyone in the area and for him to lose his life likes this and for it to happen so close to Christmas is heart-breaking.”
Mr McDermott was a farm labourer and would have been well-known in the area.
Although Gardai and the fire services have started an investigation, it is not believed the cause of the fire is suspicious.
A passer-by spotted the fire and alerted the emergency services around 9pm last night.
Local people expressed shock today at the death of the local man.
“This is particularly sad in the run-up to Christmas,” said one.
