TORY Island is to get a new helipad.
Dinny McGinley, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage & Gaeltacht Affairs, has today approved a grant of €8,000 to Donegal County Council to proceed immediately with the planning process to provide a helipad on the Co Donegal island.
If no unforeseen difficulties arise in obtaining permission, it is envisaged that work will commence on the proposed helipad during 2013.
Minister McGinley told Donegal Daily: “In the interests of health and safety it is absolutely essential to have such a facility on Tory Island.
“Many of our islands, particularly in the West already have not alone helipads, but airstrips. Tory, being one of the remotest of our inhabited islands, is entitled to this facility and I am hopeful that it will be a reality in the near future. It will be of benefit not only to the islanders, but to the general economy of the island.”
