Portsalon in Top 25 Golf courses in Ireland
Golf Digest
The waiting is over. Golf Digest have now published their updated Top 100 Irish Courses for 2013.Portsalon Golf Club has improved on its position by two places in 2011 to 25th in 2013 and are rated in the top twenty Golf Links Courses in Ireland. Due to the redevelopments we have consistently moved up the rankings over the past number of years. The Captain D P Logue said it was indeed his privilege to be Captain of Portsalon Golf Club at this time to see the course break into the top twenty-five courses in Ireland. He stressed the ongoing works, the commitment and co-operation from the members will only see the course gain further places next year and in the years to come. He congratulated everyone involved especially our head green keeper and his staff for the excellent condition of the course and to, Paul Mc Ginley and his staff on the improvements which he has recommended and have taken place to our course over the past few years. With the current improvements at the first and some more to be carried out throughout the course, we may see Portsalon Golf Club rise further up the charts next year. Our beloved Portsalon golf links ‘’The Bank’’ was first established in 1891 and has been described by many as a sleeping beauty in the North West. Portsalon Golf course is now recognised worldwide as a must play Irish links course. The scoring system employed by Golf Digest to assess golf clubs was as follows, degree of difficulty, shot making/variety, design variety, wow factor, memorability, condition and playability.
Christmas Hamper.
On Sunday 9th December the gents of Portsalon Golf Club contested for the Christmas hamper. The event attracted one of the largest ever turnouts with over 100 participating. Following the draw for tee times the event got underway in weather conditions. Due to the large turnout play was not as quick as normal and indeed a few complained about the slow play. Playing in good golfing conditions, the overall winner was Shaun Shields (13) 40 points, runner up Hugh Doherty (18) 39 points, gross Sean Kelly (8) 30points, 3rd Pauric Morrison (15) 38 points, 4th Sam Faulkner(14) 37 points. Best nines went to Ciaran Mc Fadden and Michael O’Hara. The CSS was 36 points. The captain D P Lougue thanked everyone who turned out on the day and a special thanks to the members who sponsored the Christmas hampers.
Events
On Saturday 15th December there is agents open competition. On Sunday 16th a members competition and on Wednesday 19th a gents open stableford competition. A time sheet is in operation for all competitions contact 0749159459 or go online to portsalongolfclub.com.
Christmas Party Night

Results
The winner of the Wednesday open competition played on 5th December was Eamon Farrelly (27) 38 points, runner up Brian Boyle (15) 37, gross Joe Coyle (8) 29 points, third Tony Morrison (15) 37 points. The CSS was 37 points. On Saturday the winner of the open competition was Eamon Mc Dermott (4) 37 points, runner up Garry Duffy (10) Starbane 35 points Gross Stephen Connolly (5) 30 points 3rd Aidan Friel Letterkenny (10) 33 points. The CSS was 33 points.
Christmas Golfing events.
Portsalon Golf Club have just announced their golfing schedule for the Christmas/New Year. Events get underway on Wednesday 26th with a ladies and gents open, Thursday 27th a gents open , Friday 28th four ball betterball any combination, Saturday 30th Ladies and Gents open, Sunday members competition, Monday 31st Gents open, Tuesday 1st January Ladies and Gents open, Wednesday 2nd Gents open. Portsalon Book
A reminder that Sean Mc Cormack is currently gathering information for the next edition of the Portsalon Book.It is planned to have the book with the printers in early January. So if you have any old photographs or stories of interest please forward to Sean.
