A Co Donegal community has today started a wild goose chase reviving an ancient tradition and raising funds for charity.
The geese will be walked to Carndonagh mart
Villagers are accompanying more than 50 geese across the Inishowen Peninisula more than 10 miles from Glengad to Carndonagh.
The geese are then expected to fetch top prices when they are sold at mart tomorrow.
The group left at noon and are expected at the mart in Carndonagh mart around 2pm tomorrow.
The geese were all bred specifically to be sold to raise funds for the Coronary and Cancer care charity.
The event is also honouring two members of the community, Tommy McCulgan and Angela Grogan, who passed away last January.
Both were from the village of Glengad and had been classmates at Culkeeny school. They died within days of eachother – Tommy from cancer and Angela from a heart attack.
Spokesperson Sheila Smyth said the entire community has really got behind the project.
“John McColgan of Culkeeny Post Office, and some friends came up with the idea of walking geese to Carndonagh Fatstock sale. It’s a throwback to the old days and it hasn’t happened for 70 years.
“The entire community have really got behind the fundraising throughout the year and the wild goose chase is the culmination of that,” she said.
The group has already raised cash for the charities by placing bets on the first goose egg to hatch while their were in incubations units.
The group will rest half-way on their journey tonight and hope to make it to the Carndonagh Fatstock mart for 2pm.
The group hope to make a calendar and a DVD of all the fundraising events in time for Christmas.
