A Donegal man has ben hailed a hero after saving a child who was washed off rocks.
Charles McBride, who is originally from Dungloe, was body-boarding in Cornwall, England when the terrifying incident happened.
Charles, 57, spotted little Mary Penrose, 9, being washed out to sea at Harlyn Bay.
He rushed to her aid and managed to drag her back to shore along with another person who was nearby.
Modest Charles said “She was incredibly lucky that I was in the right place at the right time. I’m sure anyone would have done the same thing. I just hope she makes a speedy recovery.”
Mary’s mum Linda, 42, said she couldn’t thank Charles enough for saving her daughter’s life.
“My husband died suddenly last year and the thought of losing Mary so close to his death is too painful to even contemplate.
“We owe these men so much and we will be forever in their debt,” she said.
Charles has been nominated for a bravery award for his heroic actions.
