Congratulations to Christopher Johnston who will lead the Irish men’s under-23 team in the 19th SPAR European Cross Country Championships on Sunday week, December 9th in Budapest, Hungary.
Christopher, who won the Donegal senior cross country title a few weeks back in Letterkenny, was first finisher in his age category in the Woodies DIY Inter County Cross Country National Championships which took place in Ratoath, Co Meath last Sunday. He will be joined on the team by David Fitzmaurice (Clonliffe Harriers AC), Patrick Hogan (Ferrybank AC), Sam Mealy (Crusaders AC), John Travers (Donore Harriers AC) and Shane Quinn (Ferrybank AC). Letterkenny AC coach, Teresa McDaid, who will be team manager for next month’s trip, said: “We have solid teams competing at this year championships with chances of quality performances at junior and senior level. For many of our juniors this is their first year competing in this age category and they will be looking to gain experience from this competition.”
There were also strong runs from Ciaran Doherty and Fionnuala Diver at the cross country championships. Ciaran finished an impressive 19th while Fionnuala was 23rd in the senior women’s race.
A large crowd is expected to take part in the annual 5K turkey trot which takes take place on Sunday, December 2 at 11.30 am. The race, which will be held in association with United Health Group, will be run over the popular inter-firms course. The ten runners who post times closest to their predicted times will win a turkey. Entry fee is eight euro and watches strictly forbidden! Registration and presentation will take place at the Aura Leisure Complex.
