THE DONEGAL GAA community at home and abroad is mourning the death earlier today of Jimmy McGonagle, a stalwart of the Donegal community in New York.
Just a few days ago Jimmy celebrated as Jim McGuinness and his Donegal All Stars brought Sam Maguire to the Big Apple.
It came 20 years after Jimmy’s nephew – Anthony Molloy – had lifted Sam for the first time in Donegal’s history.
Earlier this year his tireless work for people from this county both inside the GAA and within community organisations was recognised when he was named the 2012 Donegal Person of the Year.
The retired publican, from Glencolmcille, was a popular local figure.
At the annual New York GAA banquet in August Jimmy featured on Donegal Daily, organising the event and working as hard as normal for the club and his community.
“Jimmy was everyone’s friend,” said Rosina Gallagher, President of the Donegal Association of New York.
“He was a staunch supporter and valued member of the New York Donegal GAA Football Club, he was also a member and current Director of the New York Donegal Association. and Jimmy was the Association Donegal Person of the Year 2012.”
She added: “Please keep Jimmy and the McGonagle and Molloy families in your hearts.”
Details of his funeral arrangements will be announced later.
