Pupils, parents and teachers at Colasite Ailigh were united this morning to see Principal Michael Gibbons do the honours at the green-field site on the outskirts of the town.
It is now hoped that construction on the new school, which will cater for 350 pupils, will be complete by early 2014.
Among those present at today’s ceremony was Senator Jimmy Harte, VEC CEO Sean Purcell and Education Officer Ann McHugh as well as current pupils and teachers from the school.
Funding for the project has been made available through a Public Private Partnership involving the Bank of Ireland and the European Investment Bank.
Principal Michael Gibbons was in jovial mood as he tossed the first sod.
“We have waited thirteen years for this day and I’m very proud to be tnring the sod today,” he said.
He also paid particular tribute to former CEO of the VEC Sean O’LOngain who was also present.
