Donegal band In Their Thousands are coming home triumphant!
The band are this year’s Hot Press/2FM Guinness Play for the Day winners. After coming through their northern heat as winners the band performed at Whelan’s in Dublin on Wednesday night with fellow finalists Hot Sprockets, The Calvinists and Protobaby.
But it was the Donegal band’s stunning live set that saw them crowned as winners.
“It was really tough,” Niall Stones, Editor of Hot Press said, “but In Their Thousands were absolutely brilliant. The feeling among the judges was that this is a band with huge international potential. They are superb musicians making a truly original and epic noise.”
Local audiences will get their chance to congratulate the boys soon as they are playing a special acoustic support slot with Duke Special at An Grianán Theatre on Sat 8 Dec before heading back to the theatre for a post-Christmas show as headliners in their own right on Thur 27 Dec.
The Play on the Day prize package includes a full three day recording session, the release of a single and thousands of euro worth of top-of-the-range musical instruments, including equipment from Fender, Tanglewood Guitars, Premier Drums and Casio.
Formed in Ramelton in May 2011 by brothers Aidan and Declan Mc Clafferty, and their cousin Ruairí Friel they were later joined by longtime friend Liam Kelly and the project became In Their Thousands.
Despite being little more than a year old they have already developed a distinctive sound and have released two EPs, headlined the Earaail Awakenings Festival while their gig to promote the release of their second EP Cellars has become the stuff of local music legend busing three loads of unsuspecting fans to a secret pop-up venue in remotest Donegal where the band performed in a shed that they turned into a venue for one night only.
The band’s sound can only be described as diverse. With the songs coming from all band members their live set changes from stunning vocal harmony laced acoustic acapella folk to edgy electric alternative rock in a seamless progressive crescendo.
Songwriting and vocal duties being held down by all four band members and with a diverse and alternative approach to the way music should be enjoyed, In Their Thousands, are one of the most exciting and interesting groups to have come from the North West.
See them live at An Grianán Theatre on Sat 8 Dec (acoustic gig supporting Duke Special) and Thur 27 Dec. See www.angrianan.com for further information or call the box office on 0749120777.
