The hugely successful Irish Olympic boxing coach Billy Walsh is to be the special guest at the 37th Donegal Sports Star Awards function which takes place on Friday, January 25th in the Mount Errigal Hotel.
Walsh was head coach to Olympic Silver Medalist John Joe Nevin and Bronze Medalist Michael Conlon in the London Summer Olympics. Walsh was also a key figure in Katie Taylor’s Olympic Gold success.
The Wexford man has been head coach with the “High Performance Boxing Unit’ for a number of years and the return on that investment has been phenomenal with the Irish also picking up three medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Just last week his native County Council honoured him with the ‘Freedom of Wexford’.
The Sports Star committee is delighted that Walsh has accepted the invitation to be their special guest and he follows a list of top names that have attended the Donegal County Council sponsored awards in recent years.
They include RTE soccer correspondent Tony O’Donoghue; CEO of the Irish Sports Council and former athletic star John Treacy; boxing analyst Mick Dowling; ex-Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Packie Bonner; former GAA President and now Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly and RTE’s Northwest correspondent Eileen Magnier.
