Two of Finn Valley’s outstanding young athletes were acknowledged at the annual Athletics Ireland awards night.
Sarah Collins who set a new junior 5k track record in Koblenz in May 16.41.29 and Dempsey Mc Guigan who set a hammer junior record at 70.02 at Eton during the season.
Those who set national marks were the recipients of certificates by Sports Minister Michael Ring at a gala dinner.
Also in attendance Ulster Council chairman Neil Martin and his wife Mary. Sarah was obviously unable to be present due to Ncaa committment on the day in U S . Congrats to both from all in the club.
Sarah Collins once again underlined her enormous talent as she finished 10th in the Ncaa Collegiate cross country finals @ Tom Sawyer field ,Louisville .Kentucky Saturday . For good measure her Rhode Island Providence College team placed 2nd . This is a serious indicator for the young 18 yr old a freshman athlete incidentally 2nd freshman in the race 5 secs behind Hollander 9th .Sarahs time 19.50 to winner Saina ,Iowa State 19.28 for the 6k journey in which a field of 227 qualifiers from across the U S competed . This marks the end of her 2012 collegiate racing programme and now can focus on European junior x country in Budapest Dec 7 th .
Unrelated but nevertheless most important was solid runs by James Speight and Ann Marie Speight in Seeley Cup 10k in Belfast .Dermot Brennan had a run out for DCU in IUAA road relays at Maynooth . This weekend its national inter co senior /junior and even ages in Ratoath 11.30 start bus leaves 7pm sharp from club Centre.
