The Alliance played the Old Tom Morris Links on Saturday last .The new holes have blended in well and were in excellent condition .The previous difference in the speed of the greens is now negligible a tribute to the green keeping staff. This did not account for the relatively poor scoring on a Links course in good condition but in playing of the very back tees it played its full length into a swirling breeze and the occasional sleet shower.
The leader after 9 holes was Brian McElhinney on 34 one under ,Michael McGeady was one behind and John P.Dolan the resident Professional at Ballybofey and Stranorlar Golf Club was one over on 36 Local expert Enda Kennedy was 3 over as was local teaching professional Noel Callan. There were a number of competitors on 5 over .When 14 holes had been played the relative positions had shifted .Michael had now on top of the leader board, he was now one over, Brian had 4 bogies and was 3 over’ John was just one behind that and Enda had been joined by Sean Quigg on 6 over . Noel dropped 4 strokes over these holes and went out of competition with the others. Michael proceeded to clinch first place on level par by going one under for the last 4 holes, Brian had a similar score
to keep second place ,Sean was level par and beat Enda and John on a break of tie for 3RD place.
In the Nett the leaders after 9 were Kieran O’Neill on 20 points Peter Smyth on 19 James Kelly was on 18 and Pat O’Neill on 17 .Kieran O’Neill hit one of those patches where the score began to go away from him as he only collected 4 points for the next 4 holes It was an even worse passage for James Kelly who only managed 3 .Peter Smyth had 6 but the really hot scoring was coming from Pat O’Neill who had picked up 10 .He continued with level 2’s While James picked up 4 over 2’s to get into third place overall.Peter had one over 2’s Kieran went to 2 over level 2’s .
Pat O’Neill had an excellent round to equal the standard scratch and register his first prize in the Alliance. Peter Smyth Captain of the Rosapenna Mixed Foursomes all Ireland winning team made full use of his local Knowledge to take second place
In the Golfer of the year There was no change in the first three placing’s .Brian McElhinney is still ahead on 44 Enda Kennedy on 37 and Michael McGeady on 36.
In the Nett overall last Year’s champion has taken a firm grip on matters again this year. Odran McGettigan from Strabane G.C. is on 24 followed by John P.Dolan on 16 and Odran’s Brother Maurice is in 3rd on 15 .
A rule of golf came up .A player moved his ball by dropping his putter on it as he approached it to mark it on the green .Penalty one stroke and had to replace the ball was the decision see Rule 18-2a
The Alliance is now taking a break from proceedings until 2nd February 2013 when they will play Portsalon G.C.
