Voters on five islands in the Donegal south west constituency – Arranmore, Gola, Inishbofin , Inishfree and Tory will go to the polls ahead of the rest of the country in the Children’s Referendum today.
Polling stations will open for four hours on the smaller islands and for nine hours on Arranmore which has an electorate of over 500.
Over 1,100 people are registered to vote on the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway.
Almost 200 people are entitled to vote on Clare Island, Inishbiggle and Inishturk off Co Mayo.
The Aer Corps will bring the ballot boxes by helicopter to Inishboffin and Tory Island in Donegal with ferries and boats transporting the boxes to other islands.
Islanders in these counties traditionally vote ahead of the mainland to make sure bad weather does not hamper the return of boxes on time for the count.
