DONEGAL BRACES ITSELF AS HUGE WAVES SET TO BATTER COASTLINE THIS WEEKEND

The biggest waves so far this winter are to hit the Donegal coastline this weekend, sending surfers into a frenzy of excitement.

The prospect of waves of up to 30ft high lashing the north-west coastline have wave-riders already waxing their boards.

Irish surfers are being joined by surfers from as far away as Hawaii, France and Spain who are monitoring winds to see if conditions are favourable for the huge waves.

Weather-watchers say huge swells out in the Atlantic Ocean could reach here over the weekend and climax on Tuesday.

However, surfers are keeping their fingers crossed that southerly winds will come along and make the surfing conditions perfect.

Top Irish surfer Richie Fitzgerald says the waves could be the biggest so far this winter.

However Richie, who owns Surfworld surf-shop in Bundoran, says a lot depends on the wind.

“The swells are there but we need the wind to come from the south.

“We’ll know more in another 72 hours but we could have solid waves of up to 30ft which would be the biggest of the winter.

“We have had 50ft waves in the past but 30ft waves would certainly be great and you would have a lot of surfers coming into Ireland to follow them,” he said.

The biggest ever recorded wave hit Ireland last December when a 67ft wave was logged 60 miles off the Donegal coast at the M4 weather buoy.
