PRESIDENT BARACK Obama has been re-elected President of the United States.
The final prediction from CNN came at 04.17am, followed quickly by other American broadcasters.
Republican challenger Mitt Romney is ahead in the popular vote.
But the electoral college voting system was convincingly won by Pres Obama, passing the 270 win mark – 274 to 201.
Democrats have also held onto the Senate, taking seats off the Republicans including the seat once held by Ted Kennedy.
It was the Ohio vote which put President Obama past the winning mark.
He was also marginally ahead in Florida.
