The society recently held its annual captains prize in Letterkenny Golf Club. This year’s society captain is Mr Paddy Mc Daid of Finn Valley College. There was a large turnout on the day and in spite of the windy conditions there was some excellent golf on display. When the scores were tallied at the end of the round there was some head scratching to be done, not least by this reporter! So here goes, pay attention…
Top scorers on the day were society debutant, Ciaran Mc Fadden of Colaiste Cineal Eoin in Buncrana on 38pts and Paul Mc Ginley formerly of Finn Valley College, making his first outing of the year on 37pts. Great shooting from the two lads, however, in accordance with society rules, neither player could qualify for the captain’s prize given that it was their first outing of the year. As a result, both members were demoted into 2nd and 3rd places respectively.
This left the player finishing third as the winner. However. The Captain himself found himself in the awkward position as victor of his own prize after a fine round of 35pts. After some consultation Paddy decided to pass his winners prize onto the player in 4th place on the day, namely Kevin Murphy of Buncrana on 34pts. Jim Mc Glynn filled the final place in the top five with 33pts. Congratulations then goes to Kevin on winning the most prestigious prize of the year.
The remaining prizes, thankfully, were much more straightforward.

Deele College win Sean O Longain Cup
There will be a new name on the Sean O Longain cup this year as Deele College of Raphoe brought Finn Valley College’s three year stint as VEC golf society team champions to an end at a glorious Narin and Portnoo Golf Club on Saturday.
The Deele College team of PJ MC Gowan, Danny Conaghan and Alec Reid came in with an excellent score of 88pts to beat the VEC Head Office team with 85pts, made up of Jim Mc Glynn, Marcel Mc Cafferty and Martin Gallen into the runners-up spot for the second year in a row. Third place, also on 85pts b.o.t., went to a mixed school team comprised of Moville’s Johnny Sweeney, Carrick’s Gearoid O Dochertaigh and society captain Paddy Mc Daid.
Ten teams in all took part and thanks must go to Narin and Portnoo Golf club for the excellent quality of both the course and their hospitality. Mr O Longain was once again in attendance for the presentation, accompanied by his wife and daughter.
Other prize winners on the day were Michael Mc Grath and Danny Conaghan for closest to the pin and Kevin Murphy and Johnny Sweeney for longest drives.
Individual scores were also important on the day, though not winning any prizes they were very significant in terms of Golfer of the Year points with only two outings remaining.
Top scorers on the day were Paul Mc Ginley 38pts b.o.t., Martin Gallen 38pts, Danny Conaghan 37pts, Oliver Plunkett 36pts and Michael Mc Grath 35pts.
All of that means that the Golfer of the Year standings going into the penultimate outing of the year in Ballyliffin on the 24th November are-
1st Martin Gallen 77pts, 2nd Christopher Hegarty 60 pts, 3rd Oliver Plunkett 56pts, 4th Jim Mc Glynn 5th Sean Murphy 53pts.
