VEC committee member and Commissioner for Oaths, Peter Cutliffe has said he is being inundated with calls from the public loking to fill polling clerk positions.
Mr Cutliffe said he now feels the positions should be advertised and not kept to a certain few people.
“I have had immense support from the public in highlighting this issue & all I can do is redirect all enquiries to the offices of the County Registrar, who manages the process of recruiting polling-clerks and, to my knowledge, personnel for the subsequent counts.
“What I am really trying to do is to enable unemployed people to apply for these positions , which to my knowledge command payment of approx €500 per day”, said Mr Cutliffe.
The Minister for Environment has himself expressed his wish that unemployed people be afforded the opportunity to apply for these positions.
“I understand that overall there is almost 600 positions available between polling -day & the subsequent counts and I again call on the County Registrar to clarify the position for unemployed people in the County, from whom I have had no feedback to date”, concluded Mr Cutliffe
