U13 Hurling: Buncrana suffered an agonising defeat in the Northwest U13 Hurling league semi final on Sunday last, played in ideal conditions and in front of a sizable crowd. The Scarvey boys were sharp from the throw in and more than matched opponents Kevin Lynch’s from Dungiven, going in at half time with a slender 3 point lead. Perhaps if they were more clinical in front of goal they could have had the game wrapped up. Dungiven came out strong in the second half and put it up to Buncrana, one of their few chances on goal found the back of the net which proved to be the difference in the teams in the end. The narrow one point defeat, although hard to take in a game we dominated for large parts, does not detract from what was a great team performance. Tears at the final whistle show what this means to this team, they will learn from this and will be back stronger next year. This result is further evidence that the hard work that has been done at all ages is beginning to bare fruit and can be built on for next year. The management can only be proud of this particular group and all are a credit to themselves, their family and the club.
Senior Football: Buncrana were in Intermediate Championship action on Sunday afternoon when they took on local rivals and Division 3 leaders Carndonagh at the Scarvey. Carndonagh got off to an excellent start, catching Buncrana cold from the throw in and moving the ball quickly upfield, resulting in an opening goal. Buncrana responded well, with Ryan Bradley and Peter Mc Laughlin dominating midfield and Odhran Doherty and Oisin Doherty registering points to bring the home side back into the game. Carndonagh continued to put Buncrana under pressure with Gerard Doherty and Eanna Newton causing problems for the Buncrana defence. It was nip and tuck for the remainder of the first half and the homeside went in at halftime with a one point deficit. HT:Buncrana 6 points, Carndonagh 1-4.
Buncrana came out fighting in the second half and registered the first score of the half putting the sides level. Buncrana began to dominate possession and they stretched their lead through points from Kevin O Loughlin, Ryan Bradley, and the score of the game from Adrian Mc Colgan. The game was marred by some off the ball scuffles mid-way through the second half which resulted in sendings off for Oliver Mc Connelogue (Carndonagh), Ryan Bradley (Buncrana) and Dominic Doherty (Carndonagh). Buncrana maintained a three point lead, thanks in part to some wayward shooting by the Carndonagh forwards. In what was a good all round team performance, there were impressive performances for Buncrana by Kevin O Loughlin, Peter Mc Laughlin, Patrick Mc Myler and Adrian Mc Colgan. FT: Buncrana 0-11 Carndonagh: 1-5.
Buncrana: Noel O Donnell, Simon Mc Grory, John Doherty, Calvin Jones, Kevin O Loughlin 0-1, William Mc Laughlin, Adrian Mc Colgan 0-1, Ryan Bradley 0-1, Peter Mc Laughlin, Odhran Doherty 0-6 (5 frees), Simon Cuff, Oisin Doherty (0-1), Patrick Mc Myler, Garbhan Friel (0-1), Ciaran Mc Nicholls.
