NAOMH CONAILL 0-9 FOUR MASTERS 0-6 – Four Masters finally ran out of steam despite a brave attempt at turning over Naomh Conaill in the semi-final of the Senior Championship this afternoon.
A terrific final quarter inspired by Dermot Brick Molloy saw the men from Glenties and Fintown reach the final where they will play St Eunans.
And now they’re in the final man!
The Masters will rue no less than seven missed chances in the second half at O’Donnell Park while it was Naomh Conaill’s accuracy which put them through to the final.
IN the end Naomh Conaill had three points to spare on a final scoreline of 0-9 to 0-6.
It was a somewhat scrappy first half which saw Four Masters lead by a single point 0-4 to 0-3 at half-time.
Despite scoring three times in the first half, Dermot ‘Brick’ Molloy still went in at half-time on the chasing side.
The Donegal Town team was rising to the challenge despite the heavy schedule in recent days.
However their cause wasn’t helped when their star player Karl Lacey had to be withdrawn at half-time after picking up a serous injury in the first half.
Four Masters continued to edge in front in the second half but missed opportunities to go further in front as they hit a number of wides.
Dermot Molloy continued to chip away and along with the impressive Darragh Gallagher, they leveled the scores at 0-6 to 0-6.
Four Masters goalkeeper Paul Durcan kept his side in the game with a couple of fine saves and good marshaling of his area.
But Glenties sensed that Four Masters were a wounded animal without Lacey and chipped away at the points.
Gallagher, Molloy and Ciaran Thompson all pointed as the Genties men stretched their lead to three points 0-9 to 0-6 as the game headed into injury time.
To their credit Four Masters tried all in their powers with a number of subs being thrown into the mix.
But it wasn’t enough as they simply looked dead on their feet at the final whistle.
Many will look to Lacey’s loss at half-time but credit must go to Four Masters for a superb championship run.
In the end it was Glenties, inspired by Brick Molloy, who had a little bit more in the tank.
A cracking final is in store next weekend and although St Eunans may be slight favourites, nobody will bet again Naomh Conaill.
