”We played too much football,” was manager of the Media side CJ McGinley’s explanation after his side’s defeat by The Politicians at Bonagee last night.
If that was his excuse for the 5-1 scoreline, then The Politicians must have played more football than the entire Premiership last season in those 60 minutes.
This was the third meeting of the teams in honour of the late Donegal News editor John McCrory.
He might not have liked the result but he would have enjoyed the manner in which the game was played.
The Politicians lined out a packed team which included former Finn Harps goalkeeper Darren Nash who certainly still knows his way around the goalmouth area.
Many said he was the difference between the sides and this writer, who fluffed his lines in front of goal too many times, will certainly agree.
Seamus O’Domhnaill and brother Brian certainly gave as good as they got and first-timer Jack Murray of Sinn Fein also showed a quick turn of pace.
Some of the veterans including Liam Blaney, Paul Canning and Paddy Harte Jnr proved they still have a few summers left.
For the Media, several players didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.
They included Evan Logan, Harry Walsh, Brenadan Devenney (yes the former GAA star) and Kevin McGinley.
It’s hard to actually write these words but the final mention must go to Lord Mayor Frank McBrearty.
The Raphoe man, who was superbly marshaled throughout by Evan Logan, scored the goal of the game with a stunning free-kick.
Sportingly the Media didn’t complain that the free-kick was actually indirect or that it wasn’t actually a free-kick in the first place.
We said we would never mention anything like that.
Donegal News editor Columba Gill presented winning captain Senator Brian O’Domhnaill with the John McCrory Memorial Cup.
