Letterkenny AC’s Ciaran McBride placed third in Sunday’s highly competitive Donegal men’s novice cross country championships in Killybegs.
The 6K race was won by Gerald Gallagher of Finn Valley (22:41), with Pat Hynes, also of Finn Valley (23:10) with Ciaran McBride third in 23:52. The Letterkenny team missed out on team bronze by a few points. The team included Glen Duncan (10th in 25:17), Lee Gildea (18th in 26:38), Charlie O’Donnell (26th in 27:17) John Foley (37th in 28:45) and Brian McBride (47th in 30:33). The race had 49 finishers.
Letterkenny AC’s women’s club captain, Niamh McDaid, was the sole representative in the women’s novice race, finishing tenth. This race, which had a field of 25, was won by Lifford AC’s Claire McGuighan.
The club had five runners in action in the Armagh 10 mile road race which was won by St Malachy’s AC’s Joe McAllister in 51:01. Kevin Ferry led the black and amber vests home with a solid 57:54 which placed him 15th overall while Paul McGlinchey was also well placed 21st place after clocking 59:37. Other LAC runners among the 311 finishers were Ciaran O’Donnell (63rd in 66:42), Paul McMonagle (67th in 66:56) and Gerard Mullen (92nd in 70:53).
Well done to Noreen McGettigan who was fourth in the Donegal masters cross country championships in Castlefinn last Sunday week.
Letterkenny Athletic Club, in association with Errigal Cycling Club, are holding a 10K road race this Saturday, October 20th, at 2 pm. The race will see runners going over the Oldtown Bridge, proceeding out the Bomany Road and turning right at New Mills Bridge before heading back into town along the Conwal Road, with the finish on the Danny McDaid Track at Aura. Given that the course is flat, a large field is expected for the first staging of this event. Registrations will be take at Aura from 12.30 pm, entry fee is ten euro, with refreshments and prize-giving at Aura afterwards.
