Naomh Colmcille beat Robert Emmets to win Division 4.
Naomh Colmcille beat Robert Emmets on Saturday at Páirc Cholmcille by 3-12 to 1-11 to clinch the Divison 4 title and return the club to Division 3 football in 2013.
With Naomh Colmcille two points ahead before the game, the home side needed a win or a draw to claim the Division 4 league.
Thomas McKinley was given a guard of honour before the game for his for All Ireland win, and it was McKinley who made his mark on the game in the opening 10 minutes, finding the net twice after Naomh Colmcille cut through the heart of the Emmets defence.
Naomh Colmcille were attacking at will throughout the first quarter. Ciaran Callaghan added a point from a free and Ryan McErlean added another goal after a solo run through the middle.
Robert Emmets steadied themselves after the first quarter and the teams exchanged points in the second quarter, with Willie Gillespie adding two points and Anthony Grant finished off the half with a well taken point after a run from corner back.
This left the scores at 3-04 to 0-05 at the break.
Two early scores in the first half from Joe Donaghey and Willie Gillespie stretched the lead further. Emmets pulled back two points from frees before Joe Donaghey split the posts from a tight angle on the left and Ryan McErlean sent over a huge point from 40 metres out on the left.
As the game entered the last quarter Naomh Colmcille manager Joe Higgins brought on Mark Callaghan, William Lynch, Matthew Crossan and Conor Grant.
Robert Emmets reduced the deficit to 3-08 to 0-11 with three points in quick succession but Naomh Colmcille got a hold of the game once more and scores from Matthew Crossan, Ryan McErlean and two from Willie Gillespie stretched the lead again. John Fullerton came on with five minutes to go.
A deflected Emmets goal in injury time was too little too late and Naomh Colmcille ran out deserving winners by 3-12 to 1-11.
