MILITARY HONOURS FOR HIT AND RUN VICTIM

THE Co Donegal man knocked down and killed by a hit and run driver at the weekend was laid to rest today.

Eunan McDevitt, 47, was originally from Ballybofey and was a popular member of the community in Ballyshannon.

Today his was laid to rest in the graveyard beside St Joseph’s Church in Ballyshannon after being given a military funeral.

Mr McDevitt, a father of four, had served until last year with the Irish Army.

He was a chef at Finner Camp and today soldiers from their escorted his coffin the short distance from his home to the chapel.

A tricolour was placed on his coffin, which was followed by his widow Gabrielle and his four children.

Leading members of the Defence Forces were among hundreds who packed into the church.

Supt Leo McGinn is investigating the circumstances surrounding the popular local man’s death.

Mr McDevitt was found at the side of the N15 a mile from Ballyshannon at 00:35am on Saturday morning. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A car was seized by investigating Gardai last night but it’s thought the vehicle has now been ruled out of the investigation.

Mr McDevitt is survived by his wife Gabrielle and children Richard, Kayleigh, Paul and Marguerite and a large number of relatives and friends.
