THEY’VE been waiting NINE years for this week.
The hard-working staff at the Emergency Department at Letterkenny General Hospital have completed their last weekend in the cramped conditions they’ve had to put up with for so long.
This week they move to the new A&E, which is five times bigger than the old one.
It also has THREE TIMES more space, the latest equipment and a digital x-ray scanner which will speed up treatments for all.
Donegal Daily was given a tour of the Department yesterday and it is an incredible improvement on what went before.
New toilet facilities in reception, 14 bays for patients, a brand new resuscitation unit, and advanced care unit with 11 more units including an isolation facility.
“It really is the very best centre for the treatment of accidents and emergencies,” said hospital manager Sean Murphy.
Project manager Michael Martin added: “The facility was acutally announced by the then health minister Micheal Martin (no relation) in July 2003, so we’ve all waited a long time for this week.
“It will be a superb facility for both staff and patients going forward.”
