Naomh Colmcille continued their quest for league honours with a twelve point home victory over Letterkenny Gaels in Newtown on Saturday.
The home side took an early 3 point lead courtesy of points from Willie Gillespie, with county panellist Thomas McKinley providing the scoring pass on each occasion. The Gaels got on the scoreboard with a point in the 13th minute. Another Gillespie point followed soon after, again form a McKinley pass, to restore Naomh Colmcille’s three point lead. Two further points in the last five minutes of the half from Ryan McKinley and Ryan McErlean extended Naomh Colmcille’s lead to 5 points (0-6 to 0-1) at the interval.
The visitors made a better start to the second half, outscoring the home side by four points to two in the opening 13 minutes to reduce the gap to 3 points. Both of Naomh Colmcille’s points came from the boot of Ryan McErlean, and again Thomas McKinley was the provider. That was as close as Letterkenny Gaels got though, as Naomh Colmcille then scored 1-9 without reply in a 12 minute period during the second half. McErlean got his 4th point of the game in the 16th minute, and this was quickly followed by a score from Ryan McKinley from a William Lynch pass. Gerard Curran was next on the scoresheet, bringing the biggest cheer of the day, and then Thomas McKinley turned from provider to scorer in the 19th minute, this time Curran providing the scoring pass. Paul Friel followed up with two points before driving a shot to the roof of the net after good work by Thomas McKinley and Ciaran Callaghan. Another huge cheer came in the 25th minute for an Eddie Gillespie point, before a fisted effort from Thomas McKinley and a fifth point from Willie Gillespie concluded the scoring for Naomh Colmcille. A goal for the visitors at the end put more respectability on the result.
