A Donegal man and his friend are planning to travel to Australia but have penciled in seven months for their journey.
Unlike most other travellers, the two 25 year olds are planning to cycle the 15,000 kms Down Under.
Ambitious Aidan Murphy from Dunfanaghy and friend Paul Quinn, from Tyrone will cycle through 18 countries and expect to get to Australia next April after they leave in September.
Aidan has spent the last few weeks toning up for the challenge by cycling around the roads of Dunfanaghy and Creeslough.
The pals are hoping to raise more than €20,000 for both the Irish Cancer Society and the Alzheimers Society.
Both charities are close to the lads’ hearts with Aidan’s mother Monica dying of breast cancer in 1992 when he was just five years old.
Paul’s mother Geraldine is a full-time carer for her grandmother Sarah Cunningham, 90, who has had Alzheimers for the past 10 years.
Aidan, a sale rep, is looking forward to cycling through countries such as France, Italy, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Iran, India, Malaysia and finally Australia but admits it will be exhausting.
“We are hoping to cycle on average of 100 kms a day and over seven months we know that is going to be exhausting.
“It’s going to be an adventure and a lot people think we’re mad but it’s going to be a real challenge.
“At the end of the day we are hoping that we can raise all this money so that both these very worth charities can benefit,” he said.
